RYA Short Range Certificate (SRC) VHF Radio Exam
Practical SRC assessment at our RYA Training Centre at Hamble Point Marina. The £76 RYA exam fee is paid directly to the RYA via their online payment system — not to us. Once paid, contact us to schedule your assessment.
The Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the radio licence issued to someone who has completed both SRC training and assessment. It is a legal requirement to hold an SRC licence to operate a VHF/DSC radio.
Once you have completed the online course, you need to attend an RYA Training Centre to sit the practical exam. You do not have to have completed your online SRC course through Urban Truant to come to our facilities and sit your exam with us. Anyone who requires an SRC assessment is welcome.
What the Exam Covers
- GMDSS system background, equipment, and licensing
- Radio rules and regulations
- Marine VHF/DSC equipment operation
- Phonetic alphabet and radio language/protocols
- Channel usage and station calling procedures
- Distress and urgency alert procedures
What the Exam Involves
The exam consists of two parts:
Written Paper (30 minutes)
Multiple choice questions and longer answers covering any part of the SRC syllabus.
Practical Assessment (30 minutes)
Demonstrate your ability to use a marine VHF/DSC radio set, including making routine calls and simulating distress procedures.
We ask that you attend for two hours total. This allows time to complete the necessary administration and gives you time to familiarise yourself with our ICOM VHF/DSC sets over a coffee before the assessment.
You will learn your exam result immediately and Urban Truant will submit your paperwork to the RYA, who will issue your certificate by post.
What's Included
- Your exam administered at Hamble Point Marina
- Use of Urban Truant's practice radios
- Refreshments
- Free parking
