The RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship course is the first navigation theory course in the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) training scheme, the UK's national governing body for sailing and motorboating. It's an entry-level course designed for anyone who spends time on the water, whether crewing on someone else's boat, riding a powerboat or RIB, going out on a PWC, sea fishing, or diving. There are no prerequisites and no minimum age. The course takes 8 to 10 hours online at your own pace, with no formal exam at the end. On completion you receive the RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship certificate, recognised across the RYA training scheme as the foundation for further qualifications.

This page covers what the course includes, what you'll learn, who it's for, what's in the course pack, and how it fits into the wider RYA training pathway.

Who this course is for

The RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship course is built for anyone starting out on the water. Three groups complete the course with us most often.

  • Crew on other people's boats

If you sail or motorboat regularly with friends or family and want to be a more useful crew member, this is where to start. You'll understand what the skipper is doing, why decisions are made the way they are, and how to lend a hand with charts, weather, or pilotage. Many students who do this course go on to take Competent Crew or stay as confident, contributing crew.

  • Powerboat, RIB, and PWC owners and users

If you own a RIB, a powerboat, or a personal watercraft (or use one regularly), the principles of navigation, tides, and rules of the road apply just as they do on a sailing yacht. The course pairs well with RYA Powerboat Level 2. You can take them in either order, but the theory layer makes the practical course land more cleanly.

  • Sea anglers, divers, and other water users

Tides, weather, charts, and the rules of the road matter to everyone afloat, whether you're heading out on a fishing boat or running a dive RIB to a wreck. The course gives you the basic awareness to make better decisions about when to go, where to go, and how to stay safe.

  • Also suited to

    • Paddleboarders and kayakers wanting to understand tides, weather, and basic navigation
    • Experienced dinghy or keelboat sailors who want a structured refresh on the navigation side
    • New boat owners wanting a grounding before stepping up to Day Skipper Theory

What you'll learn

The syllabus is set by the RYA. It covers twelve topics, each taught from first principles with interactive exercises along the way.

  1. 01 Charts and publications. What charts show, how to read them, where to find the official information you need.
  2. 02 Safety afloat. Lifejackets, emergency procedures, what to do when things go wrong.
  3. 03 Engine checks. The basic pre-departure routine that catches problems before they become incidents.
  4. 04 Buoyage systems. How marks and lights tell you where you can and can't go.
  5. 05 Tidal awareness. What tides do, why they matter, how to plan around them.
  6. 06 Visual navigation. Using transits, bearings, and landmarks to know where you are.
  7. 07 Electronic navigation. Chartplotters, GPS, and how to use digital tools alongside traditional methods.
  8. 08 Pilotage. Navigating in close waters, entering and leaving harbours.
  9. 09 Rules of the road. The international regulations for preventing collisions at sea.
  10. 10 Anchoring. When, where, and how to anchor safely.
  11. 11 Weather forecasts. Where to find them, how to read them, what to do with the information.
  12. 12 Passage planning. Putting it all together to plan a safe trip from A to B.

How it works

How the course works

  1. The course is delivered through the RYA Interactive platform, the RYA's official online learning environment used by training centres worldwide. Once you book, you'll get login details and instructions within one working day. Your course pack ships separately on first class delivery.

  2. You work through the modules at your own pace. Most students complete the course in 8 to 10 hours of study, spread over a few weeks. The structure mixes short video segments, interactive exercises, diagrams, and chartwork practice. You can come back to any module as often as you want.

  3. There's no formal exam at the end. Instead, built-in quizzes check your understanding as you progress. The RYA's view is that the certificate signals you've completed the syllabus and can apply the basics, it's not an examined qualification like Day Skipper Theory. When you finish, your instructor confirms your completion and the RYA certificate is posted out.

Where this course fits in your RYA training

RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship is the first navigation theory course in the RYA scheme. It sits below Day Skipper Theory in the syllabus. If you're not sure whether to start here or go straight to Day Skipper Theory, the simple rule is:

  • Choose Essential Navigation and Seamanship if

    • You're new to boating or have only been out a few times
    • You want a confidence-building introduction without an exam
    • You're a crew member, RIB owner, diver, angler, or paddleboarder rather than someone heading for a skipper qualification
  • Choose Day Skipper Theory if

    • You want to skipper a yacht or motor cruiser yourself
    • You're preparing for the Day Skipper Practical or building towards Yachtmaster™
    • You want the more detailed syllabus and the recognised qualification with an exam
Not sure where to start?

Not sure where to start?

There's no requirement to do Essential Navigation and Seamanship before Day Skipper Theory. Many students go straight to Day Skipper. Others find the gentler introduction here helps the more advanced content land cleanly. If you've already done Essential Navigation and Seamanship, the knowledge transfers directly, Day Skipper Theory then builds on top of it.

Why train with us

Why train with Urban Truant

Urban Truant is an RYA Recognised Training Centre based at Hamble Point Marina on the Solent. We deliver this course alongside a full programme of RYA practical training and theory courses. Three things matter when you're choosing where to study.

  1. An active training centre wrapper around the course

Like every RYA Recognised Training Centre, the course content itself is the RYA's, delivered through RYA Interactive, the RYA's official online learning platform. What we add is our own instructor support, the course pack, customer service, and the option to step into practical training with the same team. Our team includes RYA Yachtmaster™ Instructors, Examiners, and Instructor Trainers who teach the same material in classrooms and on yachts every week. Our Principal sits on the RYA Training Committee.

  2. A proper course pack, not the bare minimum

Quality Portland-style plotter, brass dividers, RYA training chart and almanac, and the RYA course handbook, all delivered in a branded Urban Truant bag. The brass dividers in particular are a deliberate add — the RYA stopped including them in the standard course pack, but most chartwork needs a set, so we include them.

  3. Full instructor support, no surcharge

Every student has access to our RYA Yachtmaster™ Instructor team for the duration of the course. Email, phone, Skype, or FaceTime, whichever works for you. There's no extra charge and no cap on contact.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need any experience to take this course?
No. The RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship course has no prerequisites and no minimum age. It's designed for complete beginners. If you've been out on a boat a few times as crew or guest, you'll find some of the topics already make sense; if you haven't, the course teaches everything from first principles.
  • How long does the course take?
The RYA recommends approximately 8 to 10 hours of online study time. Most students spread that over a few weeks. There's no time limit, you can take as long as you need.
  • Is there an exam at the end?
No. There's no formal exam. Built-in quizzes throughout the course confirm your understanding, and the RYA certificate is issued on completion of all modules. This is one of the things that makes the course suitable for complete beginners, there's no exam pressure.
  • What's the difference between this and Day Skipper Theory?
Essential Navigation and Seamanship is the introductory course: beginner level, no exam, designed for crew and water users. Day Skipper Theory is the next step up: more detailed syllabus, formal exam, designed for people who want to skipper a boat themselves. If you want to take charge of a yacht or motor cruiser, you'll want Day Skipper Theory. If you want a confident grounding for crewing or riding a powerboat, this is the right course.
  • Will this prepare me for Day Skipper Theory later?
Yes. The topics overlap, and Day Skipper Theory builds on the foundation laid here. Many students use Essential Navigation and Seamanship as a stepping stone, particularly if they're new to the subject. The course materials (plotter, dividers, almanac) carry forward to Day Skipper Theory as well.
  • Does the course suit divers, sea anglers, or paddleboarders?
Yes. Tides, weather, rules of the road, and basic navigation matter to anyone afloat. The RYA specifically designed Essential Navigation and Seamanship for a broad audience including divers, sea anglers, kayakers, jet ski riders, and PWC users.
  • Do I get a recognised certificate?
Yes. The RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship certificate is issued by the Royal Yachting Association on successful completion. It's the recognised entry-level navigation qualification across the RYA training scheme.
  • What's in the course pack?
A quality Portland-style course plotter, brass dividers, RYA training chart, RYA training almanac, and the RYA course handbook and exercises, all in a branded Urban Truant bag. The kit is yours to keep and will serve you on any future RYA theory course.
  • Do you ship internationally?
Yes. Free worldwide shipping is included in the £120 price. UK delivery is usually next working day; international delivery typically takes three to five working days.
  • How quickly can I start?
Once you book, you'll receive your RYA Interactive login within one working day. Your course pack ships the same day or the next working day. You can start the online modules as soon as your login arrives, the physical materials catch up shortly after.
  • Can I take this in a classroom instead?
This is delivered as an online course. If you'd prefer classroom theory training, our Day Skipper Theory classroom course is available at Hamble Point Marina. Get in touch and we'll talk through the options.
  • What if I get stuck or want to talk something through?
Your dedicated RYA Yachtmaster™ Instructor is available throughout the course by email, phone, Skype, or FaceTime. There's no limit on how often you can ask for help, and there's no extra charge. If a particular topic isn't clicking, we'll work through it with you until it does.
