RYA Short-Range Certificate (SRC) VHF Radio – Exam

RYA Theory > RYA Short-Range Certificate (SRC) VHF Radio – Exam

Overview

Course
Syllabus

The Short - Range Certificate (SRC) is the radio licence issued to someone who has completed both SRC training and assessment. It is a legal requirement to hold a SRC licence to operate a VHF/ DSC radio. The course is held online and takes between 6-8 hours of self - study. Once you have completed the online course you will need to attend a RYA Training Centre to sit the short practical exam.

The exam consists of two parts: a written paper, and practical use of a marine VHF (Very High Frequency) Radio / DSC (Digital Selective Calling) set. The written paper and practical session each take 30 minutes, but we ask that you attend for two hours. This enables us to complete the necessary administration (form and passport photo), and gives you some time to familiarise yourself with our ICOM VHF/DSC sets over a coffee  prior to the assessments. You will learn your exam result immediately and Urban Truant will submit your paperwork to the RYA, who will issue your certificate by post.

You do not have to have completed your online SRC course through Urban Truant to come to our facilities and sit your exam with us. Anyone who requires an SRC assessment is welcome!

Kim - RYA Day Skipper

"I have come back to my studies with renewed enthusiasm having spent 3 days with Rich.

It all makes so much more sense and I understand the need for the detailed calculations in reality now- having been hit by a freak squal that reduced visibility and increased wind speed considerably, to say nothing of the hail and rain!

I wondered why people bothered passage planning in such detail- I now know!
Thanks and see you soon for part 2!"
